چکیده

Two investigations were carried out to assess the feasibility of using eye movement measures as nonintrusive indicants of,mental workload. In the first experiment, measures of saccadic latency and eye movement velocity were obtained during alternating eye movement scans while subjects were differentially task loaded by simple, moderate, and complex auditory tone counting. The latency and eye movement velocity measures changed but did not differ reliably as tone counting complexity (workload) was increased. In tle second experiment, the spatial extent of spontaneous saccades was measured under three levels of tone counting complexity. The results indicated that the extent of such eye movements varied inversely (p less than .0151) as tone counting complexity increased. This index appears to hold promise for the development of an objective indicator of mental workload.

Mental workload assessment using eye-tracking glasses in a simulated maritime scenario

The primary goal of this study was the assessment of maritime operators’ mental workload in simulation scenarios designed for containing typical traffic situations to be handled by officers during usual routine ship navigation. Taskload was manipulated throughout the sessions to analyse changes in ocular activity during complexity peaks. Specifically, it was tested the viability of implementing...

Evaluation of Rating Scale Mental Effort (RSME) effectiveness for mental workload assessment in nurses

Background: Mental workload is one of the factors that influence individuals’ performance in the work environment as well as their efficiency and productivity. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the Rating Scale Mental Effort (RSME) for mental workload in nurses. Materials and Methods: This study was descriptive and cross-sectional conducted on 75 nurses. For assessment ...

ASTEF: a simple tool for examining fixations.

In human factors and ergonomics research, the analysis of eye movements has gained popularity as a method for obtaining information concerning the operator's cognitive strategies and for drawing inferences about the cognitive state of an individual. For example, recent studies have shown that the distribution of eye fixations is sensitive to variations in mental workload---dispersed when worklo...

Malleable Attentional Resources Theory: A New Explanation for the Effects of Mental Underload on Performance

This paper proposes a new theory to account for the effects of underload on performance. Malleable attentional resources theory posits that attentional capacity can change size in response to changes in task demands. As such, the performance decrements associated with mental underload can be explained by a lack of appropriate attentional resources. These proposals were explored in a driving sim...
